This work explores how different combinations of sensory experiences under shared conditions create unique personal memories through performativity. In order to exclude preceding information, its location is chosen with reference to the concept of liminal space.
Each solenoid is positioned in a different location
to explore spatial elements from the space, like a window,
a door,
a wall, etc. While light in the white box presents dreamy and blurry memories, sound that resonates through the space embodies the sense of place and time.

video, The Place We’ve Been, 2023
<The Place We’ve Been> is
composed of white boxes randomly placed in space and Arduinos that are
individually connected to them. Each Arduino is programmed with one input(PIR
sensor) and two outputs(LEDs, a solenoid). The PIR sensor attached to the box acts
as an actuator for Arduino triggering
it when an audience approaches the box closely.
When the Arduino is triggered, the
audience can observe the blinking LEDs through a thin slit in the box. At
the same time, a
solenoid located at an random point
away from the box generates various
sounds by tapping different
parts of the space in
sync with the rhythm of the LEDs. While
the audience looking into the box
experiences both the visual information
about LEDs and auditory information from the solenoid, their
visual experience is confined to the interior of the box. Conversely, other
audience members, physically free
to explore the source of the tapping sound throughout the entire space,
lack the visual information happening inside the
box.
This work explores how different combinations of sensory experiences under shared conditions create unique personal memories through performativity. In order to exclude preceding information, its location is chosen with reference to the concept of liminal space.
